The Ring

they think they are being ‘grown up’
but as a child
they are only playing out that role
believing
it is the only goal
they smile
they look pleased when they show off the ring
and recount proposal proposed on bended knee
apparently they are the one
but it is with a silent, ‘of many’
there was the person before them
the one no one understood
and the one who had a temper
but apparently a heart that was good
and the one before that
was the love of their life…
there is no substance to it
and i propose that the proposal
will ultimately produce a life
of refusal
they think they are being ‘grown up’
but they are reverting
to the child with a heavy sigh
trapped inside the hollow, that lurks inside
