What You Say About Me
i read what you had to say about me
and i knew,
it was time to walk away
if only you’d had friends –
when you were six
if you’d had friends
when you were sixteen
if only you had friends now
if only you’d had, ‘girly chats’
at the age when we really dream
if only,
you had this emotional release
if only,
you had learnt about people
and yourself
if only,
he had not left you for somebody else
i read what you had to say about me
and realised,
that beneath that clean surface
is a deeply scared little girl
one who has never grown up
and over time,
one who has become bitter resentful
and full of hate
i read what you had to say about me
and i realised, it was all too late
