The Words Inside Your Card – Written Monday 7th September 2009 (Aged 34)

The Words Inside Your Card

i meant the words
i wrote in your card
i wrote them with everything i am
the fabric of my being
i walked past the jewellers today
where i had planned –
to buy your birthday present
and i thought about those words
i could have stopped right there
i could have sat down on the cold pavement
and let the world collapse around me
i meant those words
and i know, i tried for so long
so scared of letting you go
my grateful feelings
even then, i knew deep inside
the end moment was always drawing near
