Clowns Have a Cost – Written Sunday 7th July 2002 (Aged 27)

Clowns Have a Cost

i cannot dance
twenty four hours a day
sometimes,
i need a little place to hide away
card tricks,
a smile and a joke or two
it is fine on my own terms
but not till it is barely new
i cannot do it
put on a show
that is just not me
for every joke cracked
tears ache for a little privacy
the privacy is what i lack
it is what i like
i smile,
and then i talk
i adore the attention
till i feel those internal contradictions
