Fool Yourself

you only fool yourself
you know deep down
that others see you for who you are
but still you fool yourself
just as you have fooled yourself
all your life
fooled yourself that it is okay
to play the dull dutiful wife
fooled yourself as a child
that they would love you right
fooled yourself along the way
that it was good to be quiet
with nothing to say
fooled yourself that it gained respect
and that people liked you that way
you only fool yourself
fooled yourself that you had coped
even though the punchline of coping
came with a resounding choke
fooled yourself that when joking
it was okay to never understand the joke
fooled yourself that the spoken word
was for others
at least seen and not heard
and you fool yourself now
but we see the inner truth
and we know you can't fool yourself
that is why contentment remains aloof
