Pursuit of Youth
the pursuit of ‘youth’
when it was there
it was pushed away
in favour of being, ‘older’
but no one thought –
‘being older’
would place you in the firing line
or leave you in, ‘no man’s land’
it is a place of neither here nor there
and full of second best
hanging onto the past
with chilled hands and numb fingers
we all look back to climbing frames
and fear the spread of rust
the pursuit of ‘youth’
the result of decisions,
made with battle fire –
ringing in our ears
the assault course of life
set out over pools of hard spent tears
