Lone Mother – Written Between Tuesday 15th February 1994 and October 1994 (Aged 18/19)

Lone Mother

i saw time running wild
all the while the lone mother –
holds the child
waiting for another day
when mr right rings the bell
and makes things okay
it may not be real,
but she has to keep alive somehow
she cannot help the way she feels
watch out, the dogs are about
feeding the state
it is 10:15 in whitehall
and they cannot wait –
to tell us to live another day
while all the while they screw us
for every right we have
do not leave beggars in the street
some are no good,
some still look young,
some spill blood
london is alive
look at the people who are grieving
each one desperate to survive
do not imagine it as a ghost town
what future is there
for the lone mother on a pittance a week
clothes for the body
no shows for her feet
no food on the table, not a thing to eat
