Gold Braid and Silly Hats

how does a country
end up
dressing up inequality
and privilege
in silly clothes
and false history
gold braid
and silly hats
are no excuse
for turning the clock back
inequality,
is inequality
there is no evidence
for valuing people more
just because of, ‘birth right’
and silly, folklore
at a time
when our country visibly weeps
and,
rummages through food banks
when it has no real hope
and, ‘brexit’, feels so rank
why do we dress up
privilege and inequality
in something so integral
to this country’s identity
inequality,
is, after all, still inequality
