I Will Protect Her

i will protect her –
at all costs –
from gossip
from scornful aspersions
from bitterness
and stupid assumptions
i will protect her
not to suffocate
not to hold down
or ever break
but i take steps
to avoid the trips
at all costs –
i will protect my relationship
