It Is the Best You Can Hope For

i was, ‘mental’, anyway
it prepared me well
for when life decided –
not to charge admission to enter hell
being, ‘mental’,
and exposed to sadness
has explained fully to me
the flip side of gladness
i was, ‘mental’, anyway
so really,
little comes as a surprise
it is a long time
since i last painted my eyes
it is not hardship
when your specialism
is always finding a coping mechanism
when you dream –
in shades of jagged realism
i was, ‘mental’, anyway
so, what is there to lose
when hope, self-esteem and confidence
is used to the colour of a bruise
being, ‘mental’,
is the best you can hope for
especially in world,
of which you never be truly sure
