Second Best – Written Monday 24th February 2003 (Aged 28)

Second Best

you always say,
that no one should take second best
and no one should only go –
for what is good for them
but now you are tell me
take second best
do it out of love and respect
but why should i?
if the achievement is next to nothing
i am in a state
and i feel like an unwanted something
i have never craved acceptance
never sought to appease
i do not believe it achieves anything
but i cannot keep saying please
you always say,
that no one should take second best
best just to paper over those cracks
do you want me to let myself down?
but you must know i cannot do that
you know that’s not the way i work
