How Long – Written September 1997 (Aged 22)

Hong Long

how long have i really been here
years,
they don’t seem to mean that much
not when i look back
looking forward i can see so much more
in some kind of endless walk
how long –
have i really taken to get to this place
this so called self achievement palace –
where mirrors are contained –
as is the pale image of alice –
in her pseudo delicate frame
and i know –
weariness is a heavy coast upon our backs
but hope is alive
and it is the perfect match
how long have any of us really been here
who knows why it grows
it’s like some kind of endless tear
surfacing in a pool of tepid fear
who knows, who cares,
like the images we want to the images we wear
i must sometimes wonder
how long have we really been here
