Getting to Know You – Written November 2003 (Aged 38)

Getting to Know You

you are the woman in the high street
pushing a buggy
and holding a small child’s hand

you are the woman i saw at work
struggling on the stairs
struggling with too many presents
struggling because she cares

you are the faces –
of every woman your age –
who pass me in the street every single day
trouble is, they are passing faces
but you never go away

you are the curiosity i have always had
and slowly, as i know more
i embrace the sunlight
and we together, start to open closed doors

you are the sister i never had or knew
who never saw the emotional stretchmarks
as i struggled when i grew
and through a wicked twist of fate
i never knew you
