Count – Written May 2013 (Aged 38)

Count

the count has not quite reached ten
i am getting up
hauling myself up
and getting to my feet
i am looking for the ropes
but i am getting there
because under estimation
has happened once again
and my house almost –
started letting out smoke
my imbalance trapped my self confidence
and failed to anchor my hope
but i am boxing clever
and wearing my best gloves
the coldness has bitten and i cannot forget
when mum helped me with my mittens
and the winter parker was too big
that heavy fur lined hood
that felt like a load to lug
she always said, be good
and gave me the tightest of hugs
the count has not quite reached ten
no, not yet,
so let’s just hold hands and never fret
