All Those Years Ago
I can see you,
and I can hear your voice.
I hear it,
turning over and over in my mind,
and we are there,
together,
all those years ago.
And perhaps,
perhaps I should have said much more,
but it’s been an age
since we last spoke
and since we spent time together.
I wonder,
I wonder how life panned out for you.
I wonder,
I wonder what happened to you.
Was it
marriage and children?
Are you happy,
or steadily swimming,
just about coping,
paddling, but with a smile, hopefully floating?
I would like to know.
I remember,
all those years ago.
I doubt you ever think of me (why would you?)
Or the time we spent together,
but
I would just like to know how you are.
I hope that you are well,
or if not,
your well-being has not tried to run and then fell.
And I do all this,
watching myself in an internal mirror —
the one that likes to reflect the past.
We were close once,
all those years ago,
days bathed in the feelings of our hearts.
