Unwanted Family Heirloom – Written November 2006 (Aged 31)

Unwanted Family Heirloom

the saddest thing of all
is that anxiety and insecurity
will be passed onto the children
it will affect the way they live
surely it is the one family heirloom
we never want to give
all the things that hold them back
all the beliefs
all the labels
surely more damage is done
by a false label applied
on one so young,
encouraging individualism
and a growing confidence inside
how will they live,
surely it is the one family heirloom
we never want to give
undiagnosed children left to wonder
as they struggle through their teens
it will be insecurity they plunder
left crippled by unwanted beliefs
left with no confidence,
vulnerable underneath
the saddest thing of all
is that the insecurity and anxiety
will be passed onto the children
and it will affect the way they live
surely it must be one family heirloom
we never want to give

James Garratt – November 2006
