Had to Be Someone – Written Between February and June 1995 (Aged 20)

Had to Be Someone

had to be someone
i looked around
and i picked on you
you looked cold and mean
probably just trying –
to scramble out of here
the plate of your mind
the waterpool of your tears
i told you i was waiting
you said i was lazing
just trying to be someone
i tried to be everybody
but i tired quickly
and after a little time alone
i decided to be me
and that was the hardest person to be
it took me a long time
to work out who they were
and although –
i am not particularly academic
i quickly learnt
that i had better not rush in
otherwise i will get my fingers burnt
in your spare time, have a dream
