If Only They Counted Us
when a child –
does not fulfill a parents ambitions
or hope or need
simply put to one side
put out to pasture
told we are different
not the norm
all they ever did
was be born
and though that is not a crime
a perceived failure,
to fulfill selfish parental needs
sees them, ‘do time’,
if only they counted us
what parents demand,
but they are just human beings
with personalities
and character traits
yet through a lack of acceptance
condemned to a painful fate
