The Weight of Labels – Written February 2008 (Aged 32)

The Weight of Labels

i was labelled autistic
but these labels need not stick
they are given by the narrow minded
for whom,
intelligence is a sludge too thick
i was labelled, ‘undisciplined’,
that i had a wayward talent
and all this,
well it would be more than i could ever imagine
i was labelled a, ‘failure’
well, that is one school exam i did pass
there was so much wrong…
but they never cared enough to ask
i was labelled, ‘unloved’
by a sly ervous urban fox
these labels need not stick
i know, i know i have had a lot
and on the map of understanding
there are always these unexplained blots
i was labelled, ‘complicated’
well, that much is true
after it was me that instigated this abstract view
i left a treasure trove with so many clues
and if you can only use labels,
well that your costly loss and that is up to you
