Better Than Those Other Men – Written November 2011 (Aged 36)

Better Than Those Other Men

i want you to be you
and me, me on a selfish level –
wants to be better than those other men
those who shared your life
marked on calendars as, ‘way back when’
i want you to like yourself
and relish your wonderful humour
your beauty and your intelligence
which parents scoffed at as a rumour
i want you to give it all
but hold something back
the contradictions of relationships
are very hard to unpack
i want you to be alive
and not a slave to fear
ditch that ship, swim to the shore
and then, always remain near
i want to be better than those other men
or at least not have a shelf life
they just spent time trying
or trying to turn on the light
i can only give it my best
so let me lay with you
and let me rest my head upon your chest
