As Fingers Slowly Trace – Written Monday June 20th 1997 (Aged 22)

As Fingers Slowly Trace

as fingers slowly trace
it is the future i face
it is not in her eyes
that is where i will die
as hands slowly fall
away from one another
the hop dies
and sometimes,
the future fails
turn the pages
believe in fairytales
it takes an age
for the wounds to mend
in the middle of the battlefield
you need a medic
they have got to be good
as fingers slowly trace
we hold on tight
and then make up the pace
as people fall down
someone has got to pull them up
even when they’ve had enough
i will stare even deeper
i cannot wait,
it cannot be any worse
as fingers slowly trace
