Bonfires
i have gone back –
to the site of old bonfires
and with a more rational mind
the type –
which is afforded time
i have tried to see –
if there was a spark
or if we just kept warm in our beds
and often,
there is no spark
the bonfire has long since passed
and i know its heat and warmth
could never last
and in polite conversation –
we soften our approach
but whatever was once there –
is happily far away and remote
conversation is tilted –
lilted and quite polite
but matches have no spark
and the bonfire is no longer alight
