My Eyes Remain Barely Lit

i smile
but then,
i am a past master of smiling it away
and hiding it underneath
i believe that if i crack enough jokes
i may just believe
and maybe just for a second or two
i may just find i do not grieve

i smile
but i know it’s not quite real
somehow when i apply it to the situation
it is clear that it does not fit
and i know that it’s because
behind the smile there is so much pain
and i know that my eyes tell the truth
even though currently they remain barely lit
