The Soldier in the Final Line – Written Sunday 8th May 2022 (Aged 47)

The Soldier in the Final Line

i keep going
the soldier in the final line
i raise my weapon
and spill my mind
here i am
holding a line
drawing in and drawing near
those in front
spiked on fear
i owe a debt
to my long lost sear

i keep going
the soldier in the final line
this war,
this battle,
this fight
i am bathed in bruised light
destined to lose the moral argument
the one of second sight
but i am here
staggering on,
long after those in front have gone

James Garratt – Sunday 8th May 2022
