Wings – Written Wednesday 29th November 2000 (Aged 25)

Wings

if god had given me wings
instead of dreams
i could have learned to fly
poetry is the distraction
while i wait for the train to pull in
if could not dream
then perhaps i would never have had wings
i am just a boat
and with every relationship failing
i continue to float
i never stop sailing
i would rather explore a million seas
than harbour a port
pull up the anchor and let’s leave

if god had given me wings
instead of dreams
could i have ever learned to fly
poetry was just a word
to keep me busy for the time being
this boat is out on the ocean
no compass and even less direction
a rudder of pure imagination
and a sail made of indecision
if god had been my captain
if mother had been my mother
and if only my father had been my father
