The Past is a Foreign Land – Written Monday 18th September 2007 (Aged 42)

The Past is a Foreign Land

this is our life, it is here now
the past,
as they say,
is a foreign land
of course i have been back
but it feels so far away
the victorian houses
the edwardians streets
they no longer feel like home turf –
beneath my feet
true, the arcades do still make a noise
that electronic seafront soundtrack
but it no longer offers a comfort
and i am not sure i recognise the melody
it is true, i was young once
and it did mean something
but i am older now
and now it seems mean so little
is it true, that every room made
must be so brittle
have they all closed since i left
or is it just closed for me,
i do not know and i am not sure i understand
only that, it is true
my past has begun to feel like a foreign land
