Raise a Child
i look at them
and at the same time
i am always –
looking at myself
i see reflections of the past
and they reveal nobody else
i look at them
do any of us –
have the intelligence –
required to raise a child
bound to fates
that tend to swim up river
demons that hold us
and hope that failed to deliver
i look at them
they stand there
their eyes always searching
and i give them so much care
but i realise in an instant
in a moment that grabs me
that the past has a room
i wonder, do i have the key?
