Making People Laugh
making people laugh
lights up something –
that often gets lost –
in the melee
in the sludge and slurry
in the madness of life
and the constant hurry
maybe it is my fragile ego
that demands an audience
and begs for the smile
maybe it is a defensive thing
born from when i was a child
either way,
i feel content
when the laughter starts
and it becomes a torrent
maybe it is approval
telling me it is a joke
maybe it is the valid attention
or the tears that choke
maybe it is the inner voice
that has finally spoke
making people laugh
lights up something deep within me
