The Spare Room – Written Wednesday 21st February 2001 (Aged 25)

The Spare Room

the spare room looks cold
it is not decorated
and its story has been told
the house is fine
it is feeling confident and alive
yet the space of the spare room
and its feeling,
betrays the outside
it is a space that cannot be filled
but the room did not used to be spare
it used to be rich in feeling
its light, the colour of your hair
but the spare room is empty now
and, i was not even aware i had a spare room
i never noticed it before
it only became apparent
when you left the house and closed the door
the room is there
people stop by to talk
but they can not fill up the spare room
or bring it to life
maybe their hair is the wrong kind of light
or perhaps the furniture was too grand
and far too unique
the spare room is there now
but it is the only room i have without a beat
