Advancing Years
i cannot stop advancing years
the ones,
where the light starts to dim or fade
and shine less bright
i cannot stop advancing years
try as i might
i cannot stop getting older
whatever…
that actually means
after all,
it is just a phrase
one that makes it way upstream
i cannot stop accumulating birthdays
or even decades
in fact,
nothing can be delayed
and now with this collection of years
the past is strangely made
i cannot stop getting older
watching as my face changes
and my body becomes something different
my emotions mature and ferment
and i react differently to fast approaching news
even if after all this time
i still wear the same shoes
i do not know…
what getting older actually means
i have always been a butterfly collector
when it comes to life and its feelings
i cannot stop advancing years
the ones,
where the light starts to dim or fade
and shine less bright
i cannot stop advancing years
try as i might

Advancing Years – Written Monday 25th July 2022 (Aged 47)

James. All of your poems are incredible and I don’t know where to start in explaining how much I love this one. The humor, the specific details, the play on words, the fact that we’re all thinking this but probably find it too silly to express! I love love love love this poem, James! Thee folks on my social media have to read this!

Thank you. I am genuinely moved by this. I don’t do it for the likes, but when people take time to comment I am always touched and grateful. If you look at the original from my pad, I just had the two middle verses. I was typing it up today and the verse which top and tails it came to me. Thank you, I try to put humour and wordplay in :). Do share on social media. That would be lovely.

If only one could stop time, the poem even though does not talk about mortality, I cant help but think of it, the insight in the 2nd stanza is an eye-opener. It was a wonderful read!
