I Was Alone – Written Friday 26th August 2005 (Aged 30)

I Was Alone

i was alone when they found me
drunk on my own dreaming
feeling harsh about my scheming
i was alone in a place like a cave
they gave me a chance,
and i learned to be brave
i was alone when parents went in
and i was alone,
when they came back out again
and i was alone,
when i hungered for their touch
and i heard them say,
that all they ever did was their best
but i know that sometimes –
best is just not good enough
i was alone when i was chosen
when i learned to write,
and i did not feel beaten
when i first lost sight
you should not need to try
to get so far,
i mean if you can do it it shouldn’t be –
just an extension of who you are
