Tearing Me Up Inside

what does it mean,
am i stupid, am i dumb?
the madness consumes us
and then i learn to be numb
but i am throttled by emotions
and i always feel less
i understand the painful
because i was born –
ever so slightly tearful
there has always been sadness
if not fearful,
am i stupid, am i dumb?
and does getting older –
meaning being comfortably numb
i cannot just close my eyes
because there is so much –
tearing me up inside
