My Brain Has Gone Into Its Safety Mode – Written January 2012 (Aged 46)

My Brain Has Gone Into Its Safety Mode

let me sit on my own
away from the others
crash out on the settee
covered by covers
others do not understand
that my brain
has gone into its safety mode
having experienced –
the worst kind of road
let me be away from others
their politeness overwhelms me
their enquiries underwhelm me
their looks,
like bright lights
on a railway carriage
coming towards me
let me sit on my own
and forget social pleasantries
i am functioning
but no more than barely present
my brain is in safety mode
weighed down by loss
and the unpalatable cost
let me sit on my own

James Garratt – January 2012
