Gathering Wood
i had to find my reasons
i had to feel afraid
i had to gather the wood –
for a fire that they had made
i had to find my religion
by any means i could
no one should need supervision
i realised that as i gathered wood
i had to let go of them
even though they claimed –
that they understood my worth
but i quickly restrained
and changed,
as had since my birth
i had to make my choices –
from a million different hands
and outward voices,
that promised all they could
but then i found my fire
i was glad i had gathered the wood
