We Do Not Understand Happiness – Written Sunday 20th September 2020 (Aged 45)

We Do Not Understand Happiness

we do not understand happiness
or people, they ascribe a meaning
and an identity
which can never be true
and it is that conception of happiness
that leads to sadder views

people dress up happiness
in clothes that clearly do not fit
they assign happiness a role
and wonder where authenticity actually sits

this is not to blame people
for their sadness,
i know, i know, i know too well
how happiness can cling to your bones
and encourage you to decorate your own personal hell
but i also know,
my own expectations have wanted happiness
and they have felt let down
that what i thought would make me happy
has left me deeply sad
that difference between expectation and reality
is the void i hide myself in
we do not understand happiness
but i recognise it is hard to know where to begin
