Short Changed – Written November 2012 (Aged 37)

Short Changed

maybe they know
that they have been sold short
maybe in the childhood game of tag
somehow has been caught
i remember clicking my heals
i remember how i used to feel
parents easily exposed
children became adults
and they kind of know
mummy and daddy’s kind word
do not always so easily flow
as a baby they have a hold
that as a young adult
they turn to question
maybe this is where parents are caught
just before they drop the ball
just before they tumble
and fumble their way down the hall
it is the right of passage
the tunnel of unspoken darkness
where you long to turn on the light
personal identity is a journey
that sometimes becomes a fight
but we must all grow
perhaps they feel the strain
maybe they know that they have been –
short changed
