Pretend Girlfriend

You will never fool me.
You are just like a ghost—
I can see right through you,
and I do.
You speak with a voice
that, no matter
the words used,
does not mean anything.
You take yourself down
when you think
you are taking yourself up,
and the feelings you give
are fake
and never enough.
But you will never fool me
or the people
you go out with.
You may fool him,
but I have been there,
and I have lived
that impossible dream.
You have got to
sort yourself out.
You may think
you know it,
but none of us
really know
what it is all about.
That is the clever bit.
