You Never Got to Know Me
you never got to know me
never took the chance
never let the band strike up
never had the courage to dance
you never gave my friends credit
my partner, the time of day
you had to prove an untruth
and now it has all fallen away
our hearts were always open
as you were told
but you have spent a lifetime outside
and become too used to the cold
you never got to know me
and that cost you dear
you’re left all alone
with a friend near
you never had the courage
to come round here
it was no one’s fault but your own
to us, that is plainly clear
